Thanks to everyone who responded. There was a range of views from the very upset
with Yahoo through to the people who aren't bothered by the changes.
A sizable number simply said that would go with whatever option I chose - thanks
for the vote of faith :-)
Managing the ring is improving slightly - I've now started getting emailed
once again when a new site enters the queue, however the join page does
try quite hard to convince new people that they should put the server side
code fragment on the site. I'm currently advising people to grab the HTML
from a site already in the ring and customise it.
So, what of the future? The ring management still has deficiencies, and
there's less fine tuning possible than before. Stats appear to have vanished.
I have decided that I will start up a new ring, tentatively named New Golden Circle,
using RingLink (a collection of Perl scripts that can be hosted on any CGI-enabled web server).
My goal will be migrate everyone over to the new ring, and eventually, in several
months time, close down the current GC once the new one is ready to take its place.
However, this won't be the work of a few days. All sites will need to add new HTML,
and I need to customise the scripts to get them working how I want.
RingLink is still in its early days; it currently lacks a number of the features
that the pre-Yahoo HTML offered; notably the skips and previous 5/next 5 sites.
It's likely that I may even end up writing the previous 5/next 5 PERL code myself
to accelerate its appearence in the code base.
Keep an eye on this page for updates, or send me an email.

The Yahoo/Webring integration took place on Tuesday of this week.
I've survived the integration pretty well; I'm still recognised as
manager of the ring! My first impressions aren't great, but some of the
things wrong will, I hope, get sorted.
Stats aren't working at the moment, and likely won't ever again.
I've tried to mail all the ringmasters, but if I missed you (probably
because you changed email address and forgot to update the GC information)
please let me know whether you've got any problems with the new system.
The ring still works as it stands, but you'll need a Yahoo login if you
want to make any changes to the ring.

Most of you will have received an email about the integration of Webring
with Yahoo. So far, it's early days and there aren't many details to be
had. If the merge does go in a bad direction (eg putting adverts on people's
pages) my contingency plan is to move the ring to an alternative web ring
service. Unfortunately that'll need everyone to alter their GC HTML on their
pages, but by the sounds of it so will the integration too.
I've noticed that a couple of 404s have appeared in the ring - I'm waiting
a little while to be certain they've really disappeared for good, after which
I'll delete them from the ring.

Jun 17, 2000.
There are now 200 active sites in the Golden Circle ring - we're growing!!!
|
Jun 10, 2000.
Quite a few sites still have their URL for a list of Golden Circle sites
still pointing to Robert's old pages. These are now badly out of date.
The correct destination for the list link is
http://www.chorazin.org/gcircle/goldenlist.html
Please change your pages as soon as possible.
There hasn't been much improvement in the list of sites with invalid ring code.
I will be getting tough about this soon. Last warning!
|
May 7, 2000.
I now understand why Robert didn't choose featured pages to a schedule! The
next one will get chosen when I have a chance to look around the ring.
If you are the owner of any of these sites, be warned that the Webring Ring
Checker considers your Golden Circle web code invalid. I am hoping that people
will fix this themselves, but if not I'll start chasing people, and ultimately
removing sites from the ring so that the ring as whole remains navigable.
The following sites in the Ring had Invalid HTML fragments:
53, 121, 129, 140, 148, 82, 83, 150, 154, 92, 20, 174, 178, 30, 35, 183, 189, 43, 47, 112, 116, 119
Please make sure that your Webring code is on the same page as you have registered
with the Golden Circle. If you have your links on a separate page, it's *that*
page which should be set as your Golden Circle registered page.

I'm still here, but have been hopelessly busy for the last month or two, so no
new featured page yet. Updates to the ring have been happening as needed.
|
Feb 2, 2000.
A bit late, but I've just chosen January's featured page.
|
Jan 17,2000.
Checked out the list of sites, and got it to match the master list
at Webring again.

Webring stats are now producing meaningful
numbers once again!

Dec 26, 1999.
I've restarted the custom of choosing a Featured Page from the ring -
take a look at the Featured Page section
to discover this month's choice. |
Dec 9, 1999. Major
editing session just completed to get the ring cleaned up. All dead sites
removed from the ring, some others moved temporarily off the ring until their
owners fix the GC html on their pages. Page reordering now happens every 4th
week (used to be 7th). Pages in the ring will be automatically checked to
ensure the GC html fragment is correct on their pages. Page list updated to
reflect webring edits, but new sites haven't been given content markers (I'd
like site owners to tell me what their site should be flagged as, rather than
have to visit each site). |

Newsflash! The Golden Circle webring is Under New Management. My (Alan Glover)
first priority is to get the webring running smoothly once again, and after
that I'll give these pages a thorough overhaul. For now they're just the same
as before with essential alterations only (Oh, and the stats work again now!)

We are not alone!
Here's a list of other webrings
that might be of interest. |
Want to be notified
when anything new happens to The Golden Circle? Well then, scroll down to the
bottom of this page and sign your life away! |
There is now a Golden
Circle Mailing List! See the For
Members page for more info. |
Check out how traffic
much your page is receiving through The Golden Circle, and how much traffic
your page is providing other members' pages at
The Golden Circle Statistics page. |
Follow this link for
page listings that add topical
content to the page list, and a Featured Page list. |
A
Discussion
Board has been added for, well, discussions.
|
I've just
added a chat interface so that Amber lovers have a place to meet and chat! It's
called Trump Chat!
|
Pages are
now automatically rearranged weekly. Pages with fewer hits will be placed in
between those with greater hits. This should give a fair share of hits from The
Golden Circle webring to everyone! |
I have made
a link to Shadows of the Realm for
the interest of webring members. Check it out! |
