Cass Pollack is a jazz saxophonist and drummer with a slightly shady past. He has just got out of the Spartesia Reclamation Centre, having spent the last ten days trying to kick his heroin addiction. Instead he smokes a lot of marijuana to keep his mind off his old habit.
His wife, Ellen, is still mad at him and wants a divorce, but he has worse trouble than that. His former crime boss, Mr. Fish, has had enough of Cass playing both his outfit and the police off against each other, and put a contract out on him.
