The time is 2110, almost one hundred years after the Great Intervention of 2013. The humans of Earth are part of the Galactic Milieu along with the five Polities of Lylmik, Krondak, Gi, Polytroyan and Simbiari. Interstellar space travel is now a reality as are many other concepts that were formerly only discussed in Science Fiction writing. Chief amongst these are Metafunctions, or Psionics, or powers of the mind. According to the Lylmik (the eldest and most mysterious of the co-adunate races) Man will develop and evolve into the most metapsychically powerful of all the six polities
During the period following Earthís second global war the number of operant / suboperant metapsychics suddenly increased. Previously branded as witches, warlocks and the like, then frauds and charlatans, science recognised these metapsychics, they were studied and researched for military purposes. Major operant lines come from Franco-American and Celtic Russian stock as well as from the Mongols of Asia and People of Hokaido. The aborigines of Australia and bush people of South Africa were also strong potentially, but had suffered too much at the hands of those who had colonised their lands to breed strong continuous lineages.
Chief amongst all the psychically operant families are Canuck, and from the North-Western states of the USA. The Remillard family: greatest of all human metapsychics.
In 2013 Denis Remillard fled to Mount Washington in his home state of New Hampshire. He was operant, very powerful and with him were thousands of suboperants as well as many operants. It was at the height of the anti-metapsychic persecutions and Denis hoped to contact the galactic races he believed were out there (ther had been hints that they existed already). Faced by a mob of armed anti-meta fanatics they broadcast a concerted telepathic cry for help.
The almost immediate response was the Intervention: hundreds of exotic spacecraft appeared simultaneously over all the Earth's large population centres as well as Mount Washington. As far as Earth was concerned, the Galactic Milieu was a reality.
Within 70 years much had changed. The exotic races aided humanity in its colonisation of the stars. First the Cosmop worlds, easily colonised worlds settled by everybody, and then the Ethnic worlds. These were primarily settled by a single ethnic group -USA, Russia, GB, France, Scotland, Canada and Scandinavia for example. By 2110 Earth has become a place for tourists, for ethnic groups to visit their homeland and participate in immersive pageants.
Paul Remillard was the son of Denis. He became known as 'The Man Who Sold New Hampshire'. It became the Galactic capital of humanity. He was the first human Magnate of the Concilium (the Galactic Milieu's governing body). Also Paul was the first human to receive Milieu type training.
His eldest son was Marc Remillard. A paramount Grand Master and Magnate of the Concilium. He aimed to accelerate human evolution. The Concilium objected to this and it led to Marc confronting directing the Milieu. The Metapsychic Rebellion took place in 2083. Mark, known as 'The Angel of the Abyss', the Destroyer and Abaddon and Apollyon, led millions to their deaths. Both he and his brother died in 2083. His youngest brother was the one who beat him for he was more powerful: by 2083 Jon Remillard known as 'Jack the Bodiless', his body long having wasted away to leave only his brain. With the failure of the rebellion the Human Polity gained more seats on the Concilium. The threatening Remilliard line appeared to die out. Members existed, but could not breed for fear of Jonís 'bodiless syndrome'. More and more members of the human polity became part of the Galactic Unity, of which all metapsychic members of the exotic races belong to.
But by 2110 the odd one or two humans became bored with life. Life had become unchallenging to mankind who with rejuvenation processes could live up to 170 years or more. What alternatives did they have ?
The past. In 2034 Professor Theophile Guderian invented a time portal into the past operating only in the Lyons region of France and to a point 6 million years previous. The first traveller passed through in 2041 and a few years later L'Auberge du Portail opened, at first to government objections, but then sanctioned and run by Madame Guderian. She passed through in 2106.
Exile was a one way trip: no way back. One had to give up all metafunctions, be sterilised, be over the age of 21, and take a course on survival and useful skills.
