The Earth of the 2070's

The events of the comic series take place in 2073, four years after the arrival of The Horde in 2069. Doctor Tuolema had perfected the Morituri process to test it on humans by 2072, which was when the Black Watch made their attack on Cape Town.

Despite the ravages of The Horde, mankind has become an advanced and stable society which has used its technology to undo many of the mistakes made in the previous century. Unfortunately many of these are being undone by The Horde. A notable example is the re-population of many of the planet's near extinct species through cloning and genetic engineering. Unfortunately many of these species are being hunted for sport by The Horde.

Though the Padeia Institute tries to bring equality to all, there remain some injustices - real and perceived. Many believe that the Institute is overly bureaucratic and this has continued with the Military.

In general, the technology of Earth society is TL8, but with many variations. Prior to the arrival of The Horde it had space travel there was the possibility that mankind might have spread throughout the Solar System. The Horde's advanced technologies saw an end to that. The Military do employ advanced fighters capable of reaching sub/low orbit, but they are generally not a match for Horde ships.

Earthbound transportation has also been limited by the arrival of The Horde to sea, ground and subterranean only. In heavily built up areas, traffic flow is controlled by computer management systems. Long distance travel is achieved by ship or mag-lev trains. Transport knowledge is early TL8, but apart from improving current technology, it remains TL7 in practice. At the cutting edge of transport technology are contra-gravity flight shoes, which members of the strikeforce wear. They are powered directly from the wearer's own energy field - a field that is only generated by those who have undergone the process. The Padeia Military fields a range of antigravity vehicles as well, few of which, if any, are designed to leave the planet. The presence of The Horde prevents further progress.

This is also true for personal weapons, which are usually advanced slug throwers and gauss weapons. Laser technology is advanced, but bulky enough to limit them to rifles only. Communication also uses lasers as well as underground cable networks. The most accessible form of mass communication is holographic television. Power is obtained from clean sources of generation: solar, geothermal, wind, tidal and cold fusion. Again late TL7 and early TL8. Ethical considerations prevent cloning (except in secret government research facilities), but medicine may be considered to be TL8.
